Sakkiluoto Island, located in #Finland is lined with security cameras, motion detectors and no-trespassing signs. It also has 9 piers, a helipad and enough housing — all of it equipped with satellite dishes — to accommodate a small army. The island, along with 17 in the same area were raided in late September. Finnish officials claimed a crackdown on crime. But others suspect that #Russia is buying land for secret military bases. “I don’t know in whose sick mind such a thought could be formulated,” said Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia during a recent visit to Finland’s capital a few days after the raids. “Such thinking is paranoid.” Yet the problem for both is credibility. Moscow has denied so many strange and sinister things that have turned out to be true — or at least far more plausible than its counter stories. And Finnish leadership has made claims about Russia without evidence in the past. Ksenia Ivanova took this photo of Sakkiluoto Island on #nytassignment. Visit the link in our profile to see more.
