#SpeakinginDance | “I play a colonial soldier,” Akram Khan said of his role in “XENOS,” which looks at the life of an Indian man fighting in World War I. “This soldier was a hugely respected Kathak dancer, and suddenly his memories and his sense of home are pulled away by the call of the British empire.” Beginning this week, @akramkhancompany will perform “XENOS,” which means “stranger” or “foreigner,” as part of the White Light Festival at @lincolncenter. Set to music by Vincenzo Lamagna, the work blends contemporary dance and the classical Indian form Kathak. As Akram told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk: “The aesthetic is shell-shock. The dance is not just within the body. The body is what communicates, but the body is broken.” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
