The synagogue massacre on Saturday — one of the worst attacks against the Jewish community in the United States in decades — hit at the heart of one of the country’s most vital Jewish neighborhoods. The shooting left 11 people dead, all of them between 54 and 97 years old. And it shook a nation in the homestretch of an exhausting and bitter political season that has seen rising vitriol and threats of violence. Since then, thousands have come to honor the dead and comfort the living in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood where the attack took place. Visitors included the Pittsburgh mayor, a hundred-strong delegation of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and President Donald Trump, accompanied by the first lady, Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
