N a g a s a k i , J a p a n This am, I’d love for you to reflect on your ♥️heart, what we do each day, matters Meet Mister Nishi, an atomic bomb survivor of war. Impossible for me to not cry while writing this letter to you. I traveled to Nagasaki, Japan right by my Grandmother’s house to interview him +hear his story: when mister nishi was in junior high, during class, August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on his hometown, his entire life changed. 80,000 people were killed, mostly innocent civilians. he lost all of his family members in an instant + he also later found their bodies & hand buried them as a child. he saw his friends moments after the bomb dropped that survived w/ their skin melted off of their bodies...he could not tell who they were. he saw his friends & family suffer a painfully brutal death, the pain tremendous to overcome. As a child, he began to hold resentment/anger towards the Americans, being so young, he had a hard time understanding it was war. his community of teachers, church & friends kept him alive. his aunt wrote him a letter to share how he could not harbor anger towards anyone for this time. Rather, later, he worked on himself, practiced “gaman” (great resilience) & began sharing his story + message into adulthood to help promote anti-war activity. He still does this at 87 years old, today. we are grateful for mister nishi: his bravery, story, his love, grace, forgiveness, his heart. through the tough times, in the big cities, it’s hard to see the light sometimes. you’re okay, there are ways we can help. we can do our part to love more: gently share + teach others of our differences, to accept and embrace one another: this is far more important than we realize to stop the hate. Some things we can do to help our communities: mentor children & community, volunteer with kids, check in on your friends, give them an ear to lend. speak gently about our different religious beliefs. spread love, help do your part to be the change you wish to see. I love you guys, & praying for Pittsburgh ♥️ we can love deeply + pray for others, be the love. ♥️ If you’d like to write a love letter to Mister Nishi, stay tuned for more
