This rather strange looking creature is a marbled lungfish. Though they are aquatic, adults of this species can survive in riverbeds and other areas that have no rain for portions of the year. In a dry season, they can go into a period of slowed activity and metabolism called aestivation. They will remain in a mucous lined burrow in the ground until the next rain, breathing air from a small passage leading outside. Adult lungfish can be found various bodies of water such as: swamps, rivers, floodplains, and river deltas; while juveniles frequently reside between the roots of papyrus plants.
