Stranded as a one-week old pup and unable to be released back into the wild, Sura the spotted seal found her home at the @alaskasealifecenter. Now four, she is thriving and and picks up training concepts quickly. Sura was the first animal on the PHOCAS project, which aims at understanding sea ice loss in the Arctic that is progressing at an unprecedented rate. Ice-dependent seals like Sura are particularly sensitive to such rapid environmental change. The data from this project will be used to determine habitat requirements, predict species’ resilience to changing conditions in the Arctic, and in turn, support efforts to take appropriate action. #spottedseal
