This beautiful bird is a red-winged parrot photographed at @loroparque. Parrots like this one have bright colors for several reasons. First, the green color that makes up most of their plumage is a perfect way to camouflage itself in dense foliage. Facial markings sometimes help them hide as well, concealing the head shape in order to blend in with their environment. Sometimes they use their coloring to flash at other flock members; a flash by a parrot can mean excitement, territorial display, or a warning.
