At the age of 19, Su Shi was marked out as a rising star in the civil service. But in his 30s, he fell foul to political favouritism and was demoted from his high-ranking position, even spending a year in jail. ⠀

'Wood and Rock' was a metaphor for surviving difficult situations, such as the one Su Shi found himself in, but still being able to grow tall.⠀
