The work marked a crucial turning point in Manzoni’s career. Rigorously colourless and animated only by the creases of the canvas, ‘Achrome’ is, in the artist’s words, ‘a totally white – or rather, totally colourless – surface, removed from all pictorial phenomena’.⠀
