This glamorous portrait by Philip de László depicts the British actress, Madeleine Carroll.
Painted in 1935, the year that she rose to fame in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, making her the first ‘Hitchcock Blonde’. The film catapulted her to international stardom and she was awarded a Hollywood contract, becoming the highest-paid actress of her time.
Her work with the Red Cross during the Second World War earned her the Légion d’Honneur and the American Medal of Freedom.
