‘Polke was one of the great postmodern painters, always ready to take risks and to try out different techniques and pigments,’ says Francis Outred, our Head of Post-War & Contemporary Art in London of ‘Mexiko’, a late-1970s work by German artist Sigmar Polke (@francisoutred).

A multi-layered image, ‘Mexiko’ is dominated by a cactus plant towering over a desert landscape. The work marked the artist's return to painting after many years of experimenting with photography.

‘Polke wasn’t afraid to integrate unconnected elements in a painting either, creating a diverse tapestry of superimposed signals and systems,’ Outred continues. ‘“Mexiko” exhibits a tantalising state of flux, inviting us to open our minds and free ourselves from the tyranny of certainty.’
