Photos by @melissafarlow | A Conemmara mare and foal in Connemara National Park. The breed is known as sturdy, strong and hardy from developing in the Ireland’s harsh, western landscape although opinions differ as to the horses origin. Some believe the Connemara descended from the Viking’s Scandinavian ponies or from a now-extinct breed before the 13th century or possibly Spanish Andalusians. Arabians as well as Hackneys and Thoroughbreds were crossed but since 1926 a breeders society has preserved the bloodline of the existing breed. Whatever, it is a popular, versatile pony ridden in endurance competitions and shows.
