Kamchatka brown bear – This image is an example of what can be achieved if you pay as much attention to the backdrop as you do to the subject. This location was phenomenal and we had bears entirely surrounding us, often sauntering within just a few feet (such as Swag the naughty) but the backdrop on this particular angle was cluttered, messy and too close to throw out of focus. There were however some shadowed areas, areas which I knew would fall into underexposure if I waited for a sunlit bear to pass in front. I was then very fortunate indeed when this recently submerged individual decided to emerge right on cue, all sunlit and soggy but against a darkish backdrop. This had the added bonus of giving the dripping water something to stand out against, making the portrait more engaging and interesting, even though the disappointed bear is obviously salmon-less! If you think that the image does work then try it for yourself so remember, sunlit subject, background in shadow and expose for the sunny bit, bingo!
