Eluding Soviet soldiers, we had spent several weeks hiking in snowstorms on long, painfully difficult trails in the Nuristan Mountains. My traveling companions and I wanted to reach the Panjshir Valley and the man I wanted to meet the leader of the Afghan resistance, Ahmad Shah Massoud. It was May 23, 1985. It was still very early morning. A group of men climbed swiftly down the mountain toward us. Then I saw him. That day marked the beginning of a trusting friendship of 16 years. As the years went by, I was able to observe him. A man of rare intelligence and profound sensibility, he had an extremely acute sense of justice. His sense of honor had led him to join the resistance in order to defend his country. Massoud loved his people, and his people loved him. He was a great listener, remembering every detail, every name, every request.Minutely involved in every aspect of the resistance fighters’ daily life, he nevertheless refused to be all powerful. One day a man came to ask him to intercede on behalf of his son, who had been sentenced for treason. Massoud replied, “The release of a prisoner can only be done through the justice system. By what right can a leader decide the fate of a guilty person? When there is a judge, the leader has no power.”Weary of the wars he had waged, Massoud told me: “When all this is over, I’ll finally make my deepest wish come true. I will become a schoolteacher in the Panjshir Valley.” Published in “War + Peace” (National Geographic Publishing, 2007), and “Massoud, des Russes aux Taliban s, 20 ans de résistance afghane” (Editions 1 publishing, 2001) #panjshir #massoud #commandermassoud #afghanresistance #friendship #resistance #man #tribute #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan
