Photo by @jim_sugar | https://vimeo.com/285926303 August 21stmarks the one-year anniversary of the total solar eclipse that bisected the United States on August 21, 2017. Photographer George Post and I decided that the best place to photograph the eclipse was Madras, Oregon. We guessed right. The air was clear. The weather was magnificent. I spent three days in Madras and became friends with astrophotographer Phil Holt from Kennewick, Washington. On the morning after the eclipse, Phil and I decided that we were so moved by the event that we needed to make a film about the experience. Several people supplied additional still photos and video including photographers Jonathan Kingston, Scott Highton, and Ed Fine. Photographer and filmmaker Kim Komenich provided crucial assistance editing the film. The longer we worked on the film, the shorter it got. The final version is 7:08. A lot of great images were “left on the cutting room floor.” Thanks to everyone who contributed to the project. An incredible collection of cameras and telescopes made the film possible. Making the film was challenging, but it was fun.
