51 years ago, 5 Southeast Asian Foreign Ministers took a leap of faith. They put away old suspicions and rivalries to sign the ASEAN Declaration in Bangkok. Thus was @ASEAN born.
ASEAN has come a long way since. At the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting today, the Ministers are taking stock of where we are, and how we can do more together.
Firstly, in economic integration, I hope to see the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) concluded this year. Comprising ASEAN and 6 FTA partners, the RCEP will be the world’s largest trading bloc. It will be a strong signal of ASEAN’s commitment to trade liberalisation.

Secondly, we should use technology to bring ASEAN closer together, especially by forming the ASEAN Smart Cities Network.

Singapore will continue to work with our ASEAN colleagues, to build an “innovative and resilient ASEAN” for future generations. – LHL
