Intended to preserve the youthful and idealised visage of the deceased, ancient Egyptian ‘mummy portraits’ were inserted into the mummy wrappings after death. Presented here by Giulia Cavagnis of Sotheby’s Ancient Sculpture and Works of Art Department, this portrait from Roman Egypt shows a young girl with striking kohl-lined eyes and intricately braided hair arranged into a broad bun on top of the head.
