John William Waterhouse’s ‘The Siren’ captures the eerie and silent tension between a seductress and her devotee/prey, as an exhausted survivor of a shipwreck finds himself spellbound by the magic song of a young woman. The painting is part of a group of 27 works coming to auction from the collection of Seymour Stein, the founder of Sire Records who discovered and broke out a skyline full of stars, from Madonna, The Ramones and Talking Heads to The Smiths and The Pretenders. Stein’s autobiography takes its title – ‘Siren Song’ – from Waterhouse’s Siren, which he purchased in 1985. ‘America’s greatest living record man’ is marking the book’s publication this summer by parting with a small selection of pictorial treasures amassed over a lifetime of collecting.
