Auctioneer @ob1london commands bids for #LucianFreud’s late masterpiece ‘Portrait on a White Cover,’ which tonight achieved £22.5 million after a heated bidding battle on the phones and in the saleroom. The painting, which broke the record for a sale of the artist’s work in London, represents the culmination of Freud’s lifelong engagement with the reclining nude and depicts Sophie Lawrence, who was spotted by 80 year old Freud at @tatepublishing ahead of his retrospective in 2002. Tonight’s sale soared above pre-sale estimates, totalling £110.2 million. #SothebysContemporary
