“What I wanted…was for the paint to embody the same sensations that bodies would.” Created in 1999, Cecily Brown’s The Skin of Our Teeth is a feast of flesh. The title, a phrase that conjures a narrow escape from disaster, perhaps refers to Thomas Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name from 1943. Across three acts the play forms an allegory for the plight of mankind. Executed in luscious pinks, hot reds, peachy flesh tones and accented with swipes of yellow and black, The Skin of Our Teeth is among the most corporeal of Brown’s oeuvre.
