A powerful example of #Picasso’s highly expressive late work, on a magnificent scale, Le Peintre et son modèle is a recognisable amalgamation of a self-portrait in the evocative theme of #painter and #model. A growing fixation, the theme became a genre in itself akin to a landscape or a still-life. The motif of the female nude in particular fascinated Picasso, and here, the female figure is inspired by the last love of his life, Jacqueline Roque – depicted in a manner reminiscent of the women seen in #canvases by #Rubens and #Ingres. On view in our #London galleries ahead of Tuesday’s evening sale.
