Emil Nolde sought to capture the drama of untamed nature in his #flower paintings. The artist’s intensive preoccupation with the subject of flowers and his emphasis on #colour reflect an interest in the art of Van Gogh, which he encountered during the 1920s and early 1930s. In this depiction of a poppy field, Nolde creates a surface texture that appears to suggest movement and air, and the shimmering effect of flowers suffused in warm evening sunlight.
