Auguste Rodin dedicated this rare and beautifully patinated cast of ‘The Kiss’ – made in the artist’s own lifetime – to the doctor who treated his long-term companion, Rose Beuret, for a heart attack.

Years later, the artist’s personal secretary would recall that Rodin arrived at Doctor Vivier’s house with this large bronze ‘thank-you’ gift, carried in a wheelbarrow.

‘The Kiss’ is now on view at our London galleries, alongside all other works from our 20th Century auctions.

Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), ‘Baiser’, conceived in 1885, cast in 1890. Bronze, height: 34 in. (86.4 cm.). Estimate: £5,000,000–7,000,000.
