A ‘hanap’, or standing cup, was an important element of any princely feast in the Middle Ages.

This exquisite silver and vermeil example from 15th-century Avignon is embossed with round gadroons – ornamentations that highlighted the depth and colour of whatever liquid the hanap might contain.
