#NYTLoveCity | “We originally met when I was 7 years old and Kay was 6. I was a school prefect, and she fell in love with me when I gave her a gold star for good behavior.” David Endicott was riding the Staten Island Ferry with his wife Kay on the evening of May 19, when @elizabethbick took this photo. The ferry never ran late once for the 48 trips it took that day. While on assignment for @nytmag, @elizabethbick was onboard for each of them. Each 25-minute crossing left exactly on time, allowing the people aboard a luxury you don’t often find with NYC transportation: predictability. It may seem romantic — what is more romantic than floating around New York City? — but what the Staten Island Ferry really is is practical. The couples who rode it on May 19 weren’t thinking about the nature of romance when they boarded. Shatisa and Melissaann, in dark hoodies, were headed home from a club to Staten Island. Frederick and Danielle, a homeless couple, simply wanted to get out of the rain. Cosmo, a retired firefighter, said of Geraldine, his wife of 33 years, “We’re just comfortable together, you know?” Visit the link in our profile to see photos of all of them, and more couples, by the photographer @elizabethbick, in @nytmag’s special issue.
