The photographer @bego_anton can’t see elves. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t try to photograph them. She spent 5 years traveling back and forth to Iceland to explore a world of mythical, folkloric creatures, from water sprites to elves. It all started in 2013, when research led her to a website for an elf school in Reykjavik. She was intrigued. “I talked to the people in the village where I was staying and I realized how close they are to these invisible beings,” she said. “It’s not that they believe in them, but they can see them and talk to them and they relate to them as if they were people.” (It’s worth noting that not everyone in Iceland says they can see hidden creatures. But @bego_anton said that few locals she met didn’t respect those beliefs.) After taking a daylong course at the elf school, or Álfaskólinn, she searched for believers to photograph. Frida, pictured here, told @bego_anton about her grandmother, Sigrun, who’d been a midwife. One night, Sigrun dreamed that an elf asked for her help. When she awoke, the story went, she saw that her tools had been used. She took this as proof that it had all been more than a dream.
