#NYTLoveCity | Since 2009, Captain Paul Dauriac’s company SailAwayNY has conducted at least a thousand proposals at sea. Over all of those trips, Paul has never seen a no. Proximity to so much starry-eyed love eventually led him to leave his own marriage. He now conducts tours with his fiancée, Wipa Siritranon. “You can’t get jaded from doing something like this,” Paul told @nytmag. “To see 2 people who are genuinely in love with each other — and the guy is nervous, because he loves her so much, and she might say no — how does that get stale?” On May 19, the nervous guy texted Paul 15 times over the course of the day. Finally, he and his girlfriend were on board. As the Statue of Liberty came into view, the couple made their way up to the bow. The damp twinkle of Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” came over the speakers. Just as the boyfriend began to strike a knee, a cameraman emerged. The girlfriend looked surprised but hit all her marks — hands over mouth, then arms around neck, then passionate kiss in view of the camera. “After doing this for 9 years,” Paul said, “I still have tears in my eyes sometimes.” For @nytmag’s special issue on love in NYC, @gigilaub photographed 3 couples in NYC, all on the same day.
