@ianwillms took this photo outside of the Moss Park supervised injection site in #Toronto. Volunteers there have reversed roughly 215 overdoses since August, usually with oxygen rather than naloxone, an overdose reversal medication. Last week, a 36-year-old woman was brought back after overdosing on fentanyl. As @nycmayor Bill de Blasio has come out in support of supervised injection centers in New York, his stance has been shaped by Canada’s lead. The country’s first supervised injection facility opened in Vancouver in 2003. Nearly a decade of political and legal wrangling followed, culminating with the Canadian Supreme Court ruling in favor of the approach in 2011. No such federal approval exists in the U.S., and none is likely to come from the Trump administration. But cities from Philadelphia to San Francisco are discussing going forward anyway. In NYC, where as many as 4 sites are being envisioned as part of a 1-year pilot study, officials suggest that the Justice Department may be reluctant to interfere with a city-backed effort to combat the seemingly unstoppable surge of deaths from prescription opioids, heroin and fentanyl. Visit the link in our profile to read more about supervised injection sites in Toronto, where 2 official sites opened last year and 4 more have opened so far this year.
