Lesley Manville has been acting since she was 16. In her recent work, a theme has emerged — of women who contend with towering male artists and reveal their shortcomings. She just earned her first Oscar nomination for her turn as Cyril Woodcock in @phantomthread. Midway through the film, Cyril advises her brother, between sips from a teacup, “Don’t pick a fight with me, you certainly won’t come out alive.” The statement has since reverberated across the internet. On TV, Lesley plays the endlessly patient widow in the @bbc’s tender sitcom “Mum” and a sadistic madam in the 18th-century drama @harlotsonhulu. And on the stage, she’s currently playing the morphine-addicted mother in Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” which just arrived in NYC. Recently, Lesley squeezed in shooting @harlotsonhulu during the day while performing “Long Day’s Journey” in London at night. She used a break during the second act to learn her next morning’s lines. “I am unbelievably pragmatic,” she said. There’s no point in me going” — she affected a childlike whine — “Oh, I’m too tired!
