If Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t know who Helen Dixon is, he will soon. Helen is Ireland’s data protection commissioner, and thanks to a sweeping new European privacy law, she just might be one of the world’s most consequential regulators. Soon, she’ll gain vast new authority to investigate and fine Facebook, as well as an array of other technology giants with regional headquarters in her country. (Ireland is the European headquarters for data-hungry companies including Airbnb, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and Microsoft, which owns LinkedIn.) If these companies do not comply with Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation, seen by experts as the world’s most aggressive set of internet privacy rules, Helen says, “they will suffer consequences.” Any additional messages for @マーク・ザッカーバーグ and other tech executives? Helen says they should expect her to use her new powers “to the fullest.” The question that remains is whether her tiny agency is able — or willing — to stand up to tech behemoths of Silicon Valley. @pdossantos took this portrait of Helen Dixon.
