This jellyfish was just caught by a predator. Its last-ditch survival effort is to light up so that a larger predator might notice and come after the jelly’s attacker. Ocean explorer Edith Widder studies the bioluminescent creatures that live between 200 and 1,000 meters down in the sea, and she captured this footage while on one of her dives. It’s pitch-black there, so the fish, squids, shrimp, and jellyfish who call it home have to use light to communicate. "The ocean is a magical place filled with breathtaking light shows and bizarre and wondrous creatures, alien life forms that you don't have to travel to another planet to see,” Edith says.
