You can find this life-sized sculpture at the bottom of the ocean floor off the coast of Cancún. It’s one of 450 figures in artist Jason deCaires Taylor’s 2012 collection, “The Silent Evolution.” Each sculpture is essentially a man-made reef, providing a home to coral, algae and other marine life. As a result, the final pieces are really half sculpted by Jason, half shaped by the ocean. “Because they change so dramatically underwater, I can have two figures from the same mold, and after a year they’re completely unrecognizable,” he says. See more of Jason's work at go.ted.com/oceanatlas.
