The first memorial dedicated to the United States’ history of lynching and racial inequality just opened in Montgomery, Alabama. It’s called the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and it’s a six-acre site and monument founded by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Bryan Stevenson, a TED speaker and the founder of EJI, spent years documenting the 4,300 lynchings that took place across the United States between 1877 and 1950. Architect and TED speaker Michael Murphy saw the research and approached Bryan about the possibility of memorializing the atrocities. Now their vision is a reality, and the result is a stunning visual representation of something that is not such a distant part of America’s past. “Stevenson hopes it’s also an important step toward the US acknowledging the collective trauma of lynching in the way Germany has sought to do with the Holocaust and South Africa has with Apartheid,” says architect John Cary, who wrote about his experience visiting the site. “Rather than intellectualizing the terror of lynchings as has been done in writing, photos, and films, the memorial physicalizes it.” To learn more, visit go.ted.com/lynchingmemorial
