Imagine never knowing when and where you might black out. That’s the reality for the 50 million people worldwide with epilepsy. Right now, neurologist Mark Cook is creating a device that could give those people a “seizure forecast,” or a real-time prediction of when their next seizure might happen. This would allow them to go somewhere safe, alert a loved one, or even take medication to stop the seizure in progress. Mark’s team is still working on testing, but they’re hopeful that this tool will eventually have a massive impact and reduce some of the stigma associated with this disorder. “My dream with all of this is not only to change individuals but to change the whole system and the way people think about epilepsy,” Mark says.
