We celebrate May Day today with good reason. Our economy grew stronger than expected last year. This year we have sustained the momentum, but the longer term outlook is uncertain. Trade tensions between China and the US will affect Singapore, even though we are not involved in the fight. Many sectors of our economy are also experiencing technological disruption.

But in every disruption lies opportunity. We’re helping workers cope with the changes, e.g. by developing Industry Transformation Maps (ITM) to guide companies and workers on their transformation journey.

This is Brother Chan Chun Sing’s last May Day Rally as Labour Chief. I thank him for his good work at the NTUC. Now he hands over the baton to Brother @ng.chee.meng. I am confident that Chee Meng will do his utmost for workers, and strengthen the tripartite partnership between workers, the Government, and the NTUC. – LHL
