Before Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established as a Park and conferred with the protections that come with that status, cut and run clearcutting resulted in the destruction of much of the old growth forest in this part of Tennessee and North Carolina. Individuals who knew the area and wanted to preserve its beauty banded together to help the US government raise the $7M+ needed to create the park by piecing together the 522,000+ acres (2,000+ km2) that now make up the park. GSMNP is the most visited National Park in the United States, as one of the few parks in the eastern part of the country, so if you visit you'll be in good company!
