Lion cub – This was a glorious morning in Kenya’s Masai Mara last year. We had found the lions in the pre-dawn light and they were on the move. Instead of trailing slowly behind we took a detour and got about half a mile in front of them, hoping that soon we would see them crest a distant ridge. Arriving at where we thought they were heading our hunch proved correct as right by the side of the dirt track an adult male was feeding on the remains of a zebra killed the night before. Knowing that he was one of the coalition of males that formed the apex of the pride we were at least certain that soon they would come our way. With all the time in the world to position our vehicle appropriate to the light and to ensure that our cameras and lenses were set up accordingly the pride soon hoved into view, lionesses, sub-adults and young cubs. Four generations in all and a pride in its pride! The male of course was typically belligerent and unwilling to share the bounty so for a while the cubs occupied themselves with some play-fighting before intermittently, and cautiously trying their luck. This is what one of the older cubs was contemplating in this image, emboldened to try and approach the male but with no luck.
