Photo by @joannapinneo // Like many women in Ghana, Zainab Abubakeri still cooks on a three-stone fire outside using wood for fuel especially when she has to make a big pot of sauce or a staple dish like Banku, made from fermented corn and cassava. She also cooks meals in her kitchen on two coal pot stoves or a Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) stove. More than three billion people worldwide still cook over open fires using wood, coal or dung. The simple act of cooking causes roughly 4.3 million premature deaths per year from respiratory and pulmonary illnesses from inhaling these toxic fumes. These deaths disproportionately affect women and children who spend the most time indoors in close proximity to dirty cook stoves. This global crisis causes more deaths than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV combined. About four years ago Zainab bought an LPG stove. She hated cooking over the three-stone fire. She said that the smoke gave her a headache and after regular use, her whole body ached, “cooking over the three-stones is like hell,” she complained. While she likes the coal pot stove better than wood she can’t always get charcoal and it is expensive to use as her main fuel. She stopped using the LPG stove a few months ago because the cost of fuel almost doubled. Zainab went back to her two coal pots and the three-stone cooking with wood for now. #everydayafrica #womenempowerment #powerafrica #cleancooking
