‘Tapovan’, meaning forest of meditation, is a triumph of Syed Haider Raza’s use of colour and his spiritual and symbolic engagement with nature.

The painting is a highlight of our Asian Art Week auctions in New York and will be on display at our Rockefeller Center galleries from 16–20 March.

Raza grew up in the lush Narmada River valley in Central India, before moving to Paris in his late twenties; he eventually spent over 60 years in France. ‘Tapovan’ belongs to a key period in his career, when he brought elements of his Indian childhood and cultural heritage into his paintings.
