‘According to legend, Emperor Charlemagne first planted red grapes in the area for his table,’ says Charles Foley (@c.t.foley), our Wine specialist in London. ‘But as his beard turned white with age, his wife became increasingly annoyed that red wine stained his moustache.’

‘She ordered that the hillside is re-planted with white grapes, and this section of white wine became known as Corton-Charlemagne.’
