At the end of the 19th century, the Ancient Greek poet Sappho became a popular subject amongst artists, especially the Symbolists and Pre-Raphaelites.

The artist Gustave Moreau captured the poet several times. Here, the artist’s watercolour takes on the appearance of a small painting, with thickly applied body-colour adding depth to this composition, lit by the setting sun in the background.
