#LiveLikeARockefeller: For Elizabeth Beaman, our Senior Director of American Paintings in New York, Georgia O’Keeffe’s ‘Near Abiquiu, New Mexico’ links four of the most influential women in 20th-century art – making it a fitting work to celebrate #InternationalWomensDay.

‘O’Keeffe is arguably the most celebrated female artist of the 20th century. She first visited New Mexico in 1929, staying at the ranch owned by Mabel Dodge Luhan, a sort of Gertrude Stein of the New Mexico artists’ circle.’

The painting was represented by Edith Halpert’s pioneering The Downtown Gallery in New York. Halpert was a champion of O'Keeffe’s work, and one of the very few dealers in the 1920s to promote contemporary American art and American folk art.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, co-founder of MoMA and David’s mother, was a close friend of Halpert’s. ‘One can imagine that, because of Abby, The Downtown Gallery provenance would have been particularly meaningful for Peggy and David,’ says Beaman.
