#LiveLikeARockefeller: ‘Here you have Willem de Kooning at the end of his life revisiting Matisse, and David Rockefeller towards the end of his collecting journey looking at such a contemporary painting,’ says Sara Friedlander, our Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art in New York.
.
David acquired de Kooning’s ‘Untitled XIX’ in 1996. The painting, with its free-flowing forms and use of space, evokes Henri Matisse’s revolutionary ‘Cut-Outs’. De Kooning said at the time: ‘Lately I’ve been thinking that it would be nice to be influenced by Matisse. I mean, he’s so light-hearted.’
.
As a boy, David shared his father scepticism towards contemporary art, but his appreciation grew through his mother’s – and later his own – activities at the MoMA.
.
‘David was, of course, a great collector of Impressionist and Modern paintings,’ says our specialist. ‘But he also loved the art of his time.’
