‘My highlight of 2017’ – In July, the Beauneveu Lions broke the world record for any medieval work of art sold at auction.
.
‘I remember being struck by their beauty,’ recalls Donald Johnston, our International Head of European Sculpture in London, of when he first saw the work.
.
The lions were originally carved in 1364–66 for the family tomb of Charles V of France. Some 400 years later, at the height of the French Revolution, the government dismantled the tomb and the lions were acquired by an English aristocrat.
.
André Beauneveu (c. 1335–1402), A carved marble group of two addorsed lions, 1364–66. Sold for: 9,349,000, including buyer’s premium.
.
The Exceptional Sale 2017 – 6 July at Christie’s London.
