'My highlight of 2017' – This hand-painted dragon scroll by Chen Rong (c. 1200–1266) sold for $49,967,500, over 40 times its low estimate and the highest price of the season.

The scroll was originally created as part of a rainmaking ritual. ‘Dragons have long symbolised water,’ explains Elizabeth Hammer, our specialist in Chinese paintings in New York. .
‘Funnily enough, whenever we showed this dragon scroll to a client there would be a heavy rainstorm. It's as if they were showing off!’
