'If you're a minimalist, every piece has to be perfect for what it is and relate to everything else. The look I favour, with multiple layers of interest, is more forgiving. So if three pieces seem out of place, they just become part of the story, as opposed to the whole story.'

For Corrigan, how we live in a space is more important than how it looks: ‘We will take an 18th century-table and put a marine varnish on it, so you can put a cup of hot coffee down on it and not worry about leaving a ring; or buy a 17th-century oak commode from Christie’s and turn it into a bathroom sink.’

‘I really live by what I say: I want people to live in their homes. If it’s too fine a piece of furniture, they’ll be afraid to sit in it.’
