This is a simulation of two black holes colliding and creating gravitational waves. Einstein predicted the existence of these waves, but no one had ever verified them — that is, until September 2015 when LIGO scientists became the first people to detect them using very precise instruments in Louisiana and Washington. Their discovery was just awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, and it has already transformed our understanding of the universe. “This is a revolution in astronomy, like when Galileo invented the telescope,” says astrophysicist Gabriela González, one of the LIGO researchers. “It's like when they added sound to silent movies. This is just the beginning.” To watch Gabriela’s #TEDTalk about how this discovery happened, visit go.ted.com/ligo
