When Laolu Senbanjo was a child, he was transfixed by his grandmother’s tattoos. She was Yoruba, which is an ethnic group from the southwestern part of Nigeria, and inked on her skin were beautiful lines and detailed symbols from Yoruba mythology. Laolu had no idea that those symbols would inspire his entire career as an artist. One day he thought, “what if we all walked around like gods and goddesses from Yoruba mythology?” So he started painting directly on people's bodies, creating a project called The Sacred Art of the Ori. ‘Ori’ in Yoruba mythology means ‘your soul’ or ‘your essence.’ “Only when you tap into your Ori, then you can actually move mountains,” @laolunyc says. Through his work, he hopes to share part of his heritage and change the way people talk about African art. Watch his #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/SacredArt
