The joint winners of the newly-launched $250,000 Sotheby’s Prize have been announced! Jurors Sir Nicholas Serota, Connie Butler, Okwui Enwezor, Donna de Salvo, and Allan Schwartzman have decided to split this year’s prize between two exhibitions, both of which will explore underrepresented areas of history: ‘Many Tongues: Art, Language, and Revolution in the Middle East and South Asia’ @mcachicago and ‘Pop América, 1965-1975’ @nashermuseum.‘Many Tongues’ will be the most extensive #ContemporaryArt exhibition in the western world to explore the relationship between the #MiddleEast and South Asia, while ‘Pop América’ will reveal the contribution of #LatinAmerican artists to the #PopArt period, and how, in their hands, this seemingly playful style became a vehicle for strong political messages. In addition to the two Prize winners, the jury has also commended three remarkable exhibitions with an award of $10,000 each: ‘Ree Morton: The Plant That Heals May Also Poison’ at @ICAPhiladelphia; ‘Augusta Savage: Artist-Community-Activist’ at @TheCummerMuseum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida, and ‘Native North America’ at @CrystalBridgesMuseum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
