This three-month-old caracal, photographed at the @columbus_zoo, is a part of an incredibly quick and agile species of predators. They are the fastest of all the small cats, capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). In fact, they’re such excellent hunters that they were once trained to hunt game birds for Persian and Indian royalty.
One of the caracal’s most notable features is the black tufts on the tips of their ears. The function of these tufts is currently not known, but researchers speculate that caracals twitch these tufts in certain ways in order to communicate with one another.
